Melrose Abbey is a ruined Cistercian monastery founded in 1136 and the starting point of St Cuthbert's Way. The abbey is the burial place of the heart of Robert the Bruce and features some of the finest medieval stone carving in Scotland. St Cuthbert himself was an early prior here before moving to Lindisfarne.
