Lindisfarne Priory

Lindisfarne Priory on Holy Island was founded by St Aidan in 635 AD and became one of the most important centres of early Christianity in England. St Cuthbert served as prior here before retreating to the Farne Islands. The priory is reached by a tidal causeway — pilgrims must check safe crossing times. The famous Lindisfarne Gospels were produced here.
